William Richardson Tyler primarily painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Keene Valley in northern New York. He exhibited at the National Academy of Desing from 1862-1878. Much like his contemporaries in the Hudson River School, Tyler implemented the use of luminosity in his landscapes. In this painting he captures the viewers focus and draws it toward the figures in a woodland clearing.
