Susan Waters continued to develop her talent late into her career as seen here in Guarding the Sheep, signed, and dated 1887. She became well known for her pastoral scenes after settling in Bordentown, New Jersey. In 1876, Waters was honored with an invitation to show some of her painting at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. In the male-dominated world of painting, Waters proved to be ahead of her time by finding success and staking out a place of her own in art history.
